"Filth City" - The Movie Doug Ford Calls "Hurtful"

Doug Ford is calling the movie, Filth City, loosely based on the life of his late brother Rob Ford, "hurtful" and referred to the people behind it as "scumbags", according to the Hamilton Spectator.
The trailer which was shot in Hamilton was released in early March.

When a mayor running for re-election is caught on video smoking crack, he'll do whatever it takes to keep it out of the wrong hands. Inspired by true events.
This is fiction, inspired by real persons and events. Fictionalized characters, events and dialogue are used for dramatic purposes. No inference about any real persons should be drawn from the events and characters depicted herein.

From the Hamilton Spectator:
Speaking to Newstalk 1010's Rush with Ryan Doyle and Jay Michaels program Tuesday, Ford called the film Filth City "a joke."
"It's not even accurate, even the trailer, people getting shot. You've got to be kidding," Ford told Newstalk 1010. "It's outside of Rob had that issue, went and got help, I was proud of him. After that, a loss of life, so it's hurtful.
"But there's always scumbags out there that are going to do this and try to profit off anything they can."

THEFT OF VENOMOUS SNAKES IN THOROLD | Niagara Regional Police Service

We're not sure if these are the snakes in question but we've created this collage of photos taken from the Niagara Police's website...

From the NRP's website:

At about 7:00 PM on Saturday February the 18th 2017, a residence in the area of Hansler Road and Highway 20 in Thorold was broken into and a number of venomous snakes were stolen.
Police believe the residence was specifically targeted, and that the suspect(s) had information that snakes were kept and bred at the premise for reptile e-commerce.
Stolen snakes include several juvenile cobra species, rattlesnakes, adders and vipers, and a pregnant albino boa. The stolen snakes range in size from 12 to 106 centimeters. The Boa Constrictor, a non-venomous snake, is 200 centimeters in length and weighs about 7 kilograms.
Cobras belong to a sub-group of snakes known as elapids. An elapid's (cobra) venom contains postsynaptic neurotoxins that spread rapidly in its victim's bloodstream, causing respiratory failure and, eventually, death. Information available on-line at www.cobras.org advises that baby cobras have full strength venom and can defend themselves exactly like their parents.
It does not appear that there are any special provincial or municipal licensing provisions required for those persons that are involved in reptile e-commerce. Although the City of Thorold has a By-Law (No. 100-2011) respecting the care and control of animals in the city of Thorold, Schedule "B" of the By-Law as identified on the city's web site does not identify any "Prohibited Animals."
Police are asking that any member of the public who has information about the location of these reptiles to appreciate the risk of serious injury these creatures pose, even to persons trained to safely handle them.

Anyone having information about this matter is requested to call the 3 District Detective Office at (905) 688-4111 extension 3320.

CYCLIST CROSSING HWY. 401 CAPTURED IN DASH CAM VIDEO | The Hamilton Spectator

This cyclist probably had a death wish 'cause this is just craziness. We had to slow it down a bit the second time around when we watched it again. Can you imagine the things this tow trucker driver must see?
I've added 2 more videos from Wayne Edward's YouTube channel capturing more mayhem on Ontario's roads...

From The Hamilton Spectator:

It’s a little after noon on Monday and Wayne Edward is driving westbound on Hwy. 401, approaching Hwy. 427.
Suddenly, a cyclist heading against traffic swings off the right shoulder and cuts diagonally across four lanes of highway, performing a U-turn before hopping off his bike by the opposite guard rail.
Edward captured the whole unsettling scene on video with the dashboard camera in his flatbed tow truck.
“I saw the black car (beside me) was braking... so I did a quick mirror check to see if I could change lanes to give the black car room to move over,” said Edward.
“When I looked back that’s when I saw the guy darting across the highway.”

NIAGARA SQUARE TO CLOSE PERMANENTLY | NiagaraThisWeek (+ Remembering Niagara Square)

Montrose Road, 7555 - Niagara Square Shopping Centre - Niagara Square sign | May 2005 | Photo by Rashid, Alina Rida

Sad times but we guess it was inevitable. The mall was always near empty every time we visited and we've often wondered how long it would last like this - or what would become of it...

From NiagaraThisWeek.com

NIAGARA FALLS — The already largely empty halls of Niagara Square will be emptied for good this spring as the mall is set to permanently close.
Tenants inside Niagara Square were sent notices this week saying their leases will be terminated as of April 30.
The notices were sent by RioCan Management Inc. on behalf of the mall owners and affect stores in the mall that do not have a separate entrance from outside.
One of the tenants affected is the Niagara Falls Humane Society’s Cat Adoption Centre.
“It’s been a very sad day telling our staff, volunteers and supporters that the Adoption Centre is closing on April 30,” Fugler said. “We’ve been there for over seven years, and well over 2,000 cats and other small animals have found their happily ever-after from the centre. It’s been a haven for cats, for volunteers, and for people, too. It’s been amazing. Our city has been so supportive of this project throughout the years.
The notice states the mall will close permanently on May 1, 2017, and that a plan is in place to transform the enclosed space into "refurbished retail space" with more parking.

WIRT: A Canadian Model With VITILIGO Is Changing the Face of Fashion

Today I came across a few articles online about a Canadian model who has Vitiligo – the skin disease that probably the late Michael Jackson suffered from.

Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease where portions of the skin have white patches due to skin pigment loss, sort of like when someone suffers from 3-degree burns, but more pronounced. It occurs when skin pigment cells die or are unable to function. The cause is unknown but few theories range from autoimmunity, genetics to viral causes. There is no cure.

Canadian-born model, Winnie Harlow (real name Chantelle Young-Brown) from Etobicoke, Ontario, has this disease but has not let it hold her back in life. She was a former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant and although she did not win, her attitude was right on track even then as she told The New York Post in a 2014 article:

“[There was] an uproar on social media. I said, ‘Calm down. It’s just a show — and a reality show at that.’ I was cracking up.”

WIRT: GREASE is the Word - Your Toilet is NOT a Trash Can...

What I Read Today in a local newspaper, was not a news article or story but rather a PSA ad about dumping grease in toilets. I’m sure many of you are guilty of this - I am. With me it’s not in the toilet, but rather down the drain.

I actually feel quite guilty as I write this post and honestly didn’t think  I was doing any harm.

I like to make my own french fries which involves peeling a lot of potatoes and a great deal of deep frying. After awhile, when the oil is no longer needed, I would dump it, while it was still hot, down the drain. I figured it was still warm.  But now that I think about it, it wasn’t the smartest thing to do.

I no longer dump grease down the drain and now I’m asking you to do the same.

Did You Know…

WIRT: “IT’S A LONG SHOT”

Today I read an article, “It’s a Long Shot”, in our local newspaper, The Standard, which was quite interesting and entertaining about lottery tickets for the younger demographic, which was worthy of some sharing.

Apparently, lottery ticket sales to the younger generation, (ages 18-34), aka the “millennials”, aren’t as good as they’d hope it to be. It’s so low in fact, that the provincial lottery corporations are hiring a consultant to come up with new games and strategies, the paper states.

I’m surprise they are even encouraging this! However, if they must do so, instead of hiring a consultant to come up with new gimmicks or tactics, why not just consult the targeted group itself by getting them to fill out a survey of some kind… or better yet – just ask them!

ST. CATHARINES: FIRST Vertical CONDO In 2 Decades Gets DAMAGED by FIRE

began on the first vertical condominium in St. Catharines in over 20 years.
In November of 2012, construction was started and well underway when a fire broke out in May of 2013 at the Walkers Creek Condominium on Scott St across from the Grantham Plaza.

Boo Hoo. BIG LOTS Closing Its 'CANADIAN' Doors

If you haven’t heard by now, American-based retailer, Big Lots, parent company of (Canada’s) Liquidation World, is closing its doors. Yes, that includes the one here in St. Catharines on Bunting Rd – one of only 5 locations in North America! From what I’ve read, I guess they’ve decided that doing business in Canada is not such a great idea. They will try to focus strictly on the American marketplace.
