St. Catharines - Not so Ratty After All

We don't know why, but for some reason, we thought St. Catharines was one of the rattiest cities in Ontario.
Perhaps it stemmed back from an old 2016 article we read about a former GM property on Ontario Street in St. Catharines that was infested with rats ... and then later, our own experience with them outside an old townhouse we used to live in.
So needless to say, we were quite surprised when Orkin came out with their Top 25 'Rattiest' Cities in Ontario and discovered St. Catharines barely made the list. Yay for St. Catharines!

Image: Orkin

According to their website, Orkin ranked the cities by the number of rodents (rat & mice) treatments the company performed from August 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021. The ranking included both residential and commercial treatments.

VIDEO: Whatever It Takes (Hamilton Police Service)

Way to go Hamilton Police Service. Didn't know you guys were so talented, lol...

The Ottawa St. BIA threw down the gauntlet when they asked us to participate in the lip sync challenge. We accepted! Here's the result. We don't think anyone is going to recruit us to perform anytime soon, but we had a ton of fun making the video. We'll do "Whatever it Takes" for our community.

Coming together as one to battle an inferno in Port Colborne...

There was the Niagara Falls Fire Department, the Welland Fire and Emergency Services, the Fort Erie Fire Department, Thorold Fire and Emergency Services, Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services, and the Pelham Fire Department all sending their equipment and manpower to fight the blaze.

“This is definitely the biggest fire with regard to the most involvement by multiple departments across the region that I have been involved with, and I’ve been in the fire service for 38 years.” - Port Colborne Deputy Chief Mike Bendia
From the Welland Tribune:
A company that made patio furniture, above-ground pool and spa accessories was destroyed Tuesday after a massive fire spread throughout its Port Colborne facility along the Welland Canal.
More than 50 firefighters with tankers and pumpers from across the Niagara region responded to the blaze after Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services called on mutual aid to battle the inferno at Vinyl Works Canada at 2174 Barber Dr.

BEER, CIDER and WINE Grocery Store Locations (Niagara Region)

Eighty-seven new independent and large grocery stores in communities across Ontario will be authorized to sell beer and cider in April 2018. This is in addition to over 200 grocery stores across the province already authorized to sell beer and cider -- 70 of which can also sell wine.

We made a list for the Niagara Region. Finally, they've added St. Catharines to the list even though it appears it will only be selling beer and cider, for now...

VIDEO: Blood Water. B.C.'s Dirty Salmon Farming Secret

Bloody waste was captured on film by a B.C. photographer who went underwater to document the shocking discovery being spewed out into the waters off Vancouver Island from a farm-salmon processing plant...

Investigative dives at two farmed salmon processing plants reveal a shocking and horrendous secret hidden below the surface.
Bloody effluent, untreated and infected with Piscine Reovirus, is being dumped into the pristine waters of Clayoquot Sound and Discovery Passage, B.C. Canada.
Footage gathered during April, June and October, 2017

This is an international embarrassment to Canada!

Write to:
Premier John Horgan (premier@gov.bc.ca)
Prime Minister Justine Trudeau (justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca)
Tell them the B.C. salmon aquaculture industry MUST transition to land.

Inside Canada’s largest privately-owned nuclear fallout shelter (Facebook Video)

"... some things last and some things don't. ... we got these big jugs of V8 juice and after they got 10 years old they went completely black and so I drank a whole jug of V8 juice that was black and over 10 years old. You know, it didn't hurt me. It didn't taste good but I could drink it. And if you're starving that's the difference maybe between life and death."

Great featured article from the National Post

How a Canadian built a DIY nuclear bunker from 42 buried buses and plenty of concrete

Fires, floods, thieves, rodents: The elderly couple has survived all manner of calamity in recent weeks, except for the one disaster they have actually been preparing for over the past 50 years — a nuclear war. Beach is the founder of Ark Two, a privately owned, 10,000-square-foot nuclear fallout shelter, sunk beneath several metres of concrete and soil on a 12.5 acre parcel of land near his home. And, yes, the 83-year-old is accustomed to being dismissed as a “kook.”
But maybe he’s onto something. - National Post

WATCH As Car Slams Into Restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake (Facebook Video)

Scary. This incident occurred yesterday - and it was all captured on camera!...

Footage of a car slamming into a Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurant has surfaced. It happened Tuesday afternoon at Silk's Country Kitchen on Niagara Stone Road. Police say the driver of the car put it in drive instead of reverse and drove into restaurant. - 610CKTB

Blair Robertson Psychic Medium Car Crash
Thanks to everyone for the well-wishes. Wendy and I appreciate it very much, and I have passed those thoughts onto Eddie Diijon. I got the CCTV footage of the incident from the management of the Silk's Country Kitchen in Virgil, near Niagara-On-The-Lake. I cannot believe we walked away from this. To be clear: we are NOT "okay." In my case, I'm clear to fly but need immediate followup. I'll be seeing the docs tomorrow. I'm battered and bruised, have a nasty headache and assorted aches and pains. Not fun. What's holding me/us together is that I'm ALIVE. The driver was NOT charged. She refused medical attention. They cleared her of alcohol being a factor, but nothing else is known of her mental health, prescription drugs, etc. For reasons entirely unknown to me, she was allowed to simply go home. I WILL be pursuing this in due course, but for now, I need to get home and get taken care of. BLESS all of you for your love and energy. I truly appreciate it. And if you're ever in the vicinity, check out Silks for fantastic food and great service. Tell them Blair sent you. :-) <3

WATCH: Sea Lion Unexpectedly Drags Girl into Water at Vancouver-area Wharf

That's one huge sea lion - and it all happened so fast! The sea lion dragged a young girl into the waters at the Steveston Fisherman's Wharf in Richmond, B.C.
Thankfully, as you'll see, the little girl was rescued immediately.

Initially, after watching the video, we were curious as to why the sea lion showed an interest in the girl but discovered later (after reading the CBC news article), that it probably thought her dress was food!
According to SFU student Michael Fujiwara, the guy who captured it on video, the family began feeding it bread crumbs as the young girl got closer to the edge of the dock.

Andrew Trites, the director of UBC's Marine Mammal Research Unit, does not blame the animal for its behaviour in the video, according to another CBC news article:
"My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect," he said. "This was a male California sea lion. They are huge animals. They are not circus performers. They're not trained to be next to people."
According to Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations, "no person shall disturb a marine mammal except when fishing."
Trites says the sea lion in the video looks like it is used to having people feed it.

As a result of the incident...

It's a good thing it didn't bite her when it dragged her in because their bites "can cause very serious infections that may lead to amputation of a limb or even death."

VIDEO(s): Toronto's Raccoon baggage handler (+ more)

An undercover agent perhaps? Maybe not - but they seem to be everywhere in Toronto - on the subway, in a baby stroller and let's not even talk about the one captured doing the tightrope walk across some power lines back in 2013!

This latest one made headlines when he was spotted peeking out from the ceiling, checking out the passengers below in the baggage claim section at Toronto Pearson International Airport,...

VIDEO: Coghlan scores by jumping over Yadi

What a dive! What a play for the run-scoring. Probably won't see this again anytime soon. Now just set it on slow-mo and play it over again...

Chris Coghlan races home on Kevin Pillar's triple, and scores by leaping over a crouching Yadier Molina to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead

"I was coming around third and I looked to my left to see where the ball was and I saw it was going to beat me and probably the last step or two I saw Yadi go down," Coghlan said. "You're first thought is, 'OK, I'm going to run him over cause he's right over the plate.' And then I was thinking, 'since he's down, why don't you jump?'"
Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada couldn't believe it.

VIDEO: Premier Wynne and Basic Income Announcement at LIUNA Station in Hamilton

Premier Kathleen Wynne's announcement on Ontario's basic income pilot project. Three cities that will be taking part in the project include Hamilton, Lindsay and Thunder Bay.

"The project will explore the effectiveness of providing a basic income to people who are currently living on low incomes, whether they are working or not. People participating in our pilot communities will receive a minimum amount of income each year— a basic income, no matter what." (24:21 mark in the video)
She then goes on to say:
"It's not an extravagant sum by any means. For a single person we're talking about just under $17,000 a year. But even that amount may make a real difference to someone who's striving to reach a better life."

VIDEO: 4/20 Toronto: Cannabis fans slam Trudeau

"How does legalizing marijuana going to benefit Canada, sir?", asks the reporter. "It won't help us 'cause Justin Trudeau's laws are shit!", replies the dude as he takes a puff from his bong...

(LANGUAGE WARNING) David Menzies of TheRebel.media talks to some of the thousands celebrating marijuana in downtown Toronto on "4/20 Day."
I went down to Toronto's Yonge & Dundas Square yesterday to ask marijuana aficionados what they thought about Justin Trudeau's plan to finally legalize marijuana by next July. You might be surprised by their reactions:

The New $10 Banknote from Bank of Canada Marking the 150th Anniversary of Confederation (Video Playlist)

Update: When visiting the Bank of Canada's webpage, on the new Canadian commemorative bank note, enter the famous Konami Code (up, up, down, down, left-right, left-right, b-a start), combination using the arrows on your keyboard, to reveal an 8-bit rendition of "O Canada" accompanied by a downpour of the new $10 bills!

There will be 40 million of these commemorative bank notes issued, starting in June - a bit more than enough for all of us Canadians to have one...

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance Ginette Petitpas Taylor today unveiled a commemorative $10 bank note celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. This special note—showcasing our history, land and culture—was revealed during a ceremony at the Bank’s head office in Ottawa. It will enter into circulation on 1 June.

“This bank note is intended to captivate our imagination and instill pride in what we, as a nation, have accomplished,” said Governor Poloz. “It celebrates the natural beauty and majesty of our land and some of the important parliamentarians who helped shape our great country.”

The intricately designed note is unique in many ways. For the first time, four individuals are portrayed on the front of a Canadian bank note: Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir George-ร‰tienne Cartier, Agnes Macphail and James Gladstone or Akay-na-muka—his Blackfoot name.

VIDEO: Toronto's out-of-control rent problem

Someone only thought of doing this now - increasing the rent substantially, after 26 years? It won't last anyways...

Most people expect their rent to go up each year, but two Toronto tenants saw their rent legally increased by 100 per cent.
